Top 10 Steven Universe Episodes (Season 3)

#10. The New Lars: To start this list, The New Lars is a simple but very well executed episode that serves as an effective character study of Lars. In addition to being a fresh take on the “body swap” trope, this episode also shows how Lars is ordinarily received by others. The ending of this episode really cracked me up, and without going into spoilers, let’s just say it’s one of the funniest moments in the show.
#9. Too Short to Ride: Another simple but well executed episode, the main highlight is Peridot’s struggle and how she reacts to being in an amusement park. It here she learns to appreciate Earth life with Steven and Amethyst helping out and having fun.
#8. Barn Mates: This is the start of Lapis and Peridot’s friendship and it shows just how different they are. Steven acts as somewhat as a counselor for the two and again, the highlight is Peridot’s reactions to the situation. Plus Lapis’ deadpan attitude in this episode (and another coming up) make her equally as funny as Peridot.
#7. Steven vs. Amethyst: This episode takes place after Crack the Whip where Steven, Connie and Amethyst battle Jasper. On its own though, it’s a very enjoyable and funny episode involving Steven and Amethyst trying to prove who’s the weakest Gem. The way the two of them battle is just so comical, especially when they try to through a punch at one another.
#6. Crack the Whip: Where Steven vs. Amethyst was mostly laughs, this one is mostly action. Jasper is a true villain in this episode as she undermines Amethyst and puts up a good fight against Stevonnie. This Is one of Jasper’s best appearances in the show.
#5. Hit the Diamond: This episode was a neat little episode of the Gems battling a squad of Rubies…in a game of baseball. Yes, this is one of those funny episodes and it’s one of the funniest in the series. From Ruby and Sapphire’s cute flirting, Lapis’ deadpan attitude, and the quirky personalities of the Rubies, Hit the Diamond is certainly one of the highlights of the season.
#4. Bismuth: This episode introduces a new Crystal Gem and explores who she is and why she’s been in a bubble for so long. With great voice work from special guest star Uzo Aduba, Bismuth is a breakout character with a smashing personality and great chemistry with all the Crystal Gems.
#3. Super Watermelon Island/Gem Drill: This season kicked off with a bang with this two part premiere. We have a giant monster battle, an army of watermelon folk, the fate of the world at stake, plus laughs and fun along the way. The ending might have rubbed people the wrong way, but for me I thought it was satisfactory and fitting with the show’s theme of compromise over violence.
#2. Beta/Earthlings: This is considered the last appearance of Jasper at the moment and not only do we learn more about, but we also know why she’s has such hatred for Rose. The episodes provide a solid albeit tragic conclusion to the Jasper arc (for Jasper that is).
#1. Mr. Greg: It has beautiful music, excellent animation, and brings Pearl and Greg’s relationship full circle. Why shouldn’t this be #1?
Conclusion: Season 3 continues this show’s never decreasing quality with more comical episodes, heavy use of action and musical choices, and pushes the story forward in the right direction. Honorable mentions go to Bubble, Kiki’s Pizza Delivery Service, Alone at Sea and Greg the Babysitter. Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see you soon ;)
